I just came accross this Q & A with Vicky Lee (Marketing Manager) on the muesuem of London’s augmented reality app, Which  I thought was worth sharing. I am interested in looking at ways of incorporating some of the rich  history of Auckland’s Cultural institution’s, into the app. Maybe it could be incorporated through storytelling rather than just visuals. One quick note into the article if you don’t have time to read it. Q: “Overall, what have you learnt about the process so far?” A: “Simple works best.” That somes up the reoccuring concept  into only three words.

Saving Images For Web

Here is a video that I found useful for my website and I have also used this transition for my Iphone mock up posted on the blog.  The mock ups that I am creating are starting to get more detailed, therefore the file sizes are increasing. This is a worthwhile trick to use to reduce the file size, with out loosing noticeable quality.

Something important that I picked up in the video, is not to reinvent the wheel. There are plenty of already pre-made visuals out there, so It would be a big mistake to be making your own.

Apad, an Ipad clone at $150 NZD, Sounds interesting..  and extremely cheap. It runs on android. Worth noting for future references.

Design Strategy

Listed is what I think is a very successful research campaign strategy. The project is called share an idea. Design Director / Guy Pask. I was actually just reading about the use of sticky notes in the book mental models by Adaptive path’s co-founder Indi Young.

Walls of sticky notes are a great way to get other people involved in sharing there ideas. They can be trailed in many different places such as the workplace, the studio, or even lunchrooms (where people gather). Share an idea  looked to have conducted there research in more public spaces, such as conferences and conventions.

There is a nice use of Graphic Design colour arrangements. These colour arrangements make it more appealing and fun, influencing the engagement of  participant in the research project, rather than it being a tedious chore.

1) Personas – The team have defined user groups and written up goals for what the narrowed user wants.

2) Mental Models – Certain levels of grouping and categorizing of the users behaviors.

3) Sketching/ Drawing – This a good technique to use to get the participant to open up and express themselves differently to than verbally communicating.

This is a very inspiring campaign. It is a great way to define the users goal. It is important that we trail this, to identify what our specific target audience want to get and see out of the application, that we are designing for them. Of course the research does not need to be any where near as large scale as this project listed. However the time put in will be worth while in shaping a end product. Resulting in an end product that fits the users requirements and meeting there specific needs.

Ports of Auckland Annual Review 2011

Insight. Working for New Zealand

There is a nice play on scale in this publication. The significant figures are highlighted with scale, putting them on top of the hierarchy scale. The exception is the page with the full colour photos, the eye is often drawn to colour first, then followed up by glancing at the larger figures.

This play in scale is something we should be incorporating into our own info graphics. It functions nicely in readability which is successful in our graphic design sense. Notice the mat gloss paper stock, very nice I must add. This kind of paper stock is what I am most looking forward to trailing out for our publication.
